"Billy is a great guy who is easy to talk to, genuinely down to earth, and clearly has a deep understanding with training and coaching.

Being coached by Billy is a great opportunity, you’ll get a lot more than input and planning. You’ll find that he shares his wealth of knowledge that he has earned from years of dedicated learning and from his own training and racing. He often connects the dots to find the right solutions for you personally.

I often talk with Billy to bounce ideas, one important time was getting advice on my training plan for the Dragons Back Race. This was valuable as Billy identified a gaps in my plan which I believe made a difference to my performance during the race. "

Hi - I'm Billy - I'll go first-person now!

I'm the coach here, and founder of Consilience Sport Physiology. I hold an MRes in Exercise Physiology, and am currently preparing the associated research for publication.

In plain English: I've spent loads of time tinkering about in a lab with some seriously good athletes!

Precisely: I've hypothesised, designed, and prepared original endurance physiology research from scratch. The findings of which have helped at least one athlete in their preparation for the 2024 olympic games.

I'm also an athlete. Not a professional by any stretch, but 'respectable', I hope.

I've previously held a 2nd category road racing licence, and have a 49:56 25 mile TT PB to my name. Since transitioning to running I recently placed 9th in the Welsh short-course fell running championships 2026.

So while there are certainly plenty stronger athletes out there, I do have an appreciation of what it feels like to sit on the other side of the table.

I'd like to think this blend of theoretic, applied, and first-hand experience makes me a pretty effective coach.

And I'm hugely proud to have helped some truly dedicated athletes achieve some fantastic performances.

They seem happy too! You can read about their experiences here:

Process

1.).   Initial video call

I like to do a thorough job of this, so please expect the call to last approximately 90 minutes. This gives us enough time to properly cover:

  • Training history

  • Injury history

  • Season and future goals

  • Time availability and life structure

  • Coaching logistics and personal preferences

  • You!

2.).   Baseline testing

Following the call I'll go away and begin designing your training. All training will begin with some initial baseline performance testing. I may also request data (if you have it) from previous races/maximal efforts. This allows me to:

  • Analyse your strengths and weaknesses

  • Establish training zones

  • Identify a realistic time-horizon for your goals

3.).   Approve & Begin

Once your training is programmed I'll share my proposed roadmap with you prior to beginning. This gives you a chance to:

  • Understand the 'why' behind my programming suggestions

  • Ask questions

  • Tweak, improve, and approve â€‹

Key details and features

pricing_backround2.jpg

I put the same level of precision and planning into the programming of all coached clients. The two options differ in the frequency of communication on offer. For  the 'Standard Contact' programme I guarantee a 3 day response time for all messages, tweaks, and queries - in reality, I'll often reply far sooner; however, I don't guarantee this turnaround in order to respect and prioritise fast-response, 'High Support' clients.

Communication frequency is purely up to you. Some athletes have changeable lifestyles, value the ability to book a call at short notice, and like the on-hand support. Others are more independent and don't find this level of engagement necessary - do what you think is right for you; change programme at any point.

Please note, to ensure service quality I only take on a limited number of 'high-support' athletes.

Testimonials

- Craig Lowe

Fell/Mountain/Skyrunner.

Coached to two FKT's on the unsupported and self-supported variants of the Welsh 3000's route, as well as a 7th place finish at tour du roc 2026.

"I met Billy while volunteering for his Sports Science Master’s project, and it was immediately clear that he had a genuine passion for all things fitness and physiology, backed by a strong depth of knowledge. Having previously coached myself to a high level in mountain and skyrunning, I had reached a point where I was struggling to make further improvements in my uphill running, which was my main weakness. To address this, I decided to work with Billy to gain a fresh, more science-based perspective.

craig testimonial photo.jpg

During our initial meeting, we discussed all aspects of my running and lifestyle in general. Billy quickly identified that I was doing many things right, while also highlighting several areas where meaningful optimisation could be made. He took the time to understand what I truly enjoyed and valued—running in the mountains, on the beach, and spending as little time on the road as possible—and tailored my training around these preferences. This ensured the programme remained enjoyable while remaining firmly grounded in scientific principles.

Over the course of 10 months, my uphill running ability improved dramatically. In addition, when preparing for a race at altitude in the Alps, Billy suggested certain changes that significantly reduced the time required to acclimatise compared to previous seasons.

Flexibility was a key part of the coaching process, and Billy fully understood this. He was always happy to adapt sessions around non-running commitments to ensure key training was completed. When I picked up a couple of injuries during the season, he was consistently available to discuss options and provide effective alternatives, keeping me engaged while ensuring recovery and healing were properly prioritised.

Based on my experience, I would highly recommend Billy. His strong scientific knowledge, genuine enthusiasm for human physiology, and ability to apply this to my personal goals and passions made working with him both highly enjoyable and extremely effective in driving performance improvements."

- Chris Jackson

Gravel and road cyclist.

Coached to his first gravel race season. In the space of one season Chris progressed from a successful completion of The Gralloch (first ever gravel race) in 107th place (AG) to 17th (AG) place at the Thetford Forest Trophy

"When I started coaching with Billy, I had no previous experience of structured training. He was
excellent at helping me design a thorough plan that was built around my particular riding
background, time constraints, and racing goals. His practical, science-grounded approach
during our one-to-one sessions gave me the confidence I needed to dial in my performance and
nutrition targets at each stage of the process. Under his guidance, I went from strength to
strength, increasing my 20-minute power by over 40 watts before the end of my season. I cannot
recommend Billy highly enough!"

- Ieuan Belshaw

Fell and ultra runner

Coached and consulted on various projects, including a training plan consultation prior to a 4th place Dragon's Back finish in 2025

- Emily Bolus

Trail/fell/mountain runner, and mountain biker. Coached in all disciplines

"Working with Billy has been a game-changer for me. Having never had a coach before, I was keen to work with someone who would help me understand what goes into having an effective training program. Straight away Billy is super approachable and easy to talk to. I had a lot of questions about why things were done a certain way, and it was clear that Billy had infinitely more technical expertise than I would ever be able to comprehend, but was always happy to discuss underlying theories at a level I could understand.

The training plan was very malleable to my needs and tastes. For example, I prefer not to use gyms, and so Billy adapted my workout sessions to optimise the equipment I already had at home. My goals were to improve my strength and stamina in both my mountain biking and running, and Billy did a great job at balancing my interests. â€‹

embovo2_edited.jpg

When necessary, our plan was flexible day by day. If I was feeling particularly good, or not so good, following a session, Billy would provide a range of options on how to adapt the rest of the week accordingly. Checking in with each other fluctuated based on how much support I wanted at any given time. Billy kept me accountable whilst helping me to listen to my body.

In summary, Billy was an awesome guide throughout the entire process, which made my first training experience thoroughly interesting and enjoyable, and I would recommend him in a heartbeat."

- Justin Belcher

Road cyclist and runner.

Coached toward target events in both disciplines, particularly the Offa's Dyke 15 mile trail race.

“I’ve known Billy for many years and trust him completely with my training. He took me from a standing start in running to confidently completing 15-mile races across the hills here in Wales. Billy builds endurance properly and progressively, so you actually feel strong rather than just surviving. He’s experienced, thoughtful and supportive, but also knows when to push you to get the best out of yourself.”

- Dr Kevin Gunning

Road cyclist

"You are never too old to be coached. Now retired and living in France I have been coached by Billy since the beginning of the year.

He listened to my goals and objectives and then set out a weekly plan to improve my fitness and performance. The sessions were varied and took into account of any commitments I had. He was responsive and changed the sessions according to my results. I can thoroughly recommend him as a coach for all ages and levels."
