Physiology
Consultancy

Welcome to your remote sport science department

Optimise your training practice, drive athlete trust, and elevate your organisation's performance strategy with bespoke, research-driven insight.

"Working with Billy on targeted performance interventions was both stimulating and practically impactful. His input formed a meaningful part of my preparation leading into the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where I won silver in the Men’s Team Pursuit.

Billy has a
rare ability to dig into the physiological mechanisms while remaining grounded in what actually matters for performance."

Founder and Technical Director at WattShop.
Olympic silver medalist at Paris 2024.
Former hour record holder.

Struggling with inconsistencies or plateaus in performance?

Want to better understand the efficacy of a training modality

Unsure which performance trends actually have scientific backing?

Struggle to identify and interpret important scientific literature?

Purpose

Physiology consultancy at CSP covers a wide range of services and project types. The defining feature across all is a focus on the optimisation and investigation of the fundamental scientific principles underpinning human endurance performance.

We provide high-level  strategic support grounded in sport physiology literature, and delivered by those with first-hand laboratory and paper-writing experience. This service is best-suited to teams, coaches, and athletes with a desire to augment their performance system, coaching methodology, and training practice, respectively.

See below for example services

Example Services

CSP understand that support-requirements and budget considerations vary wildly in the sport performance sector. We meet you at the level of support you need; whether you're an individual athlete, coach, or established organisation, we have something to offer.

We provide services appropriate for every level of the sport performance chain. This ranges from one-off reports, consultations, and case study investigations, to retainers prioritising ongoing support, right up to large-scale bespoke projects and investigations.

Below are some examples of services we provide - the items on this  list are neither exclusive, nor exhaustive; each project is different, so please get in touch if you have something in mind that is not described below.

Please note:

In order to properly represent the level of detail offered by our consultancy services the following section is reasonably text-heavy. It is not suitable for short-form content enthusiasts, or silver bullet hunters. Please take your time to read the following - and when contacting - feel free to ask as many questions as you like to procure exactly the service you require.

Comprehensive athlete assessment and future directions audit

A highly granular, completely individualised evaluation of training and race history. Formulated to identify limiting characteristics, uncover performance opportunities, and deliver clear frameworks for future performance improvement. Available to individual athletes, coaches, and teams.

Example features include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Analysis of specific and/or broad physiologic trends. This may include individual event analysis and/or training block/cycle analysis according to the client's choosing.

    • As much data and background/anecdotal information as you supply is assessed.

    • This may include analysis of both specific interrelated trends between physiologic/practical parameters (i.e., relationships between speed/pace; power; heart rate; RPE; and race performance); as well as broader training trends (i.e., intensity distribution, training methodology/modality characteristics).

    • Analysis of training and race nutrition trends where reliable information can be provided by the client.

    • Data is compared and contrasted with existing physiology literature and current real-world coaching experience from the consultant.

    • Future directions and strategies for all aforementioned areas are suggested.

  • Should a particular future emphasis on a training modality or intensity be suggested, example sessions/sessions design frameworks can be included to help the coach/athlete achieve these aims.

  • Additional, potentially ergogenic interventions (i.e. altitude training, heat training, S&C) may be suggested where suitable for the athlete. In the instance of their recommendation individualised frameworks are provided.

  • Where it seems evident that future performance improvements lie outside the purview of physiology, CSP will signpost to other appropriate professions; e.g. performance psychologists, physiotherapists etc.

  • Conclusions, recommendations, and frameworks are delivered according to the coach/athlete preference. The client may express a weighting toward written v.s graphical content. Examples include:

    • Traditional report (using scientific terminology) for an audience with a scientific background

    • Step-by-step bulleted manual layout.

    • Verbal delivery over a video-call with supporting learning material. For larger projects, face-to-face meetings and presentations are also available.

Literature review and training integration report

Knowledge gap?
Confused by conflicting training ideas?
Heat?
Altitude?
Critical speed, critical power, FTP?
LT1? LT2? MLSS? RCP? VO2max?
Pyramidal v.s. Polarised?

Cut through the sea of nonsense clickbait and poorly interpreted 'science media' slop. This report corroborates important literature surrounding the topic(s) of your choosing. We then pick out the key papers and points, translate the jargon, and equip you with clear, actionable, frameworks to apply to your training and racing. For those wanting the highest level of insight we offer assessment of your training and racing history in tandem to provide even greater personalisation.

Every member of the team at CSP has experience designing and carrying-out original endurance and/or environmental physiology research from the ground up. It's precisely because of this that we can make the claim: there is no perfect study - there are no silver bullets; sound science lies in critical appraisal, acceptance of limitations, proper interpretation, and contextual nuance. We do this for you, sifting through the lot, and buying you back time that could be spent on your athletes.

Available to individual athletes, coaches, and teams.
